Last time I was home in Florida, I found an alligator skin carrying case filled with old slides tucked away in my grandma's closet. We got them developed and made digital, too.
I'd been waiting for the right time to use that vintage scrapbook. The result was a special birthday gift. Love you, Dad.

I'll admit it. I probably spend too much time on Pinterest. It's just so easy to find a ton of pretty pictures-- especially from Katie Kukulka's boards. Lots of floral, neutral tones and black & white beauties with an overall antique feel.
If you're looking for more inspiration, check out Katie's Lost Artisan blog.

It was a hot Independence Day (and sadly, I didn't have a bathing suit to jump in that water). Yorktown is very small with a cute downtown area of historic buildings, private residences and a couple local eateries. I love how it isn't filled with commercial shops and restaurants. Although there was a super long line for Ben & Jerry's. Our view from the rocks watching the fireworks was pretty spectacular. And now, it feels like Monday again.

Last weekend, we visited another couple in Richmond to see their new place and go camping. They live on the second floor of a building from the 1800's. Their little neighborhood, just outside of the city, has tons of character. We walked over to a park across the street that overlooked the Lucky Strike cigarette factory.

It's such a pretty drive from Richmond to Staunton. There's old rustic farmhouses, quaint towns on winding roads and scenic mountain views. We hiked to a watering hole and jumped off fallen trees into cool, crisp water. Our campsite was right next to the river, so when dusk came we roasted marshmallows over the fire pit.
Our last stop was a beautiful winery called Veritas. I'd get married here...

My tad-bit-country friend, Nicole, got married in Asheville, NC earlier this month (yes, she says y'all). Before the wedding we ventured down to quaint West Asheville for a good breakfast spot.
Somehow, I completely missed getting any photos of her rustic, farm venue. But it was so perfect for her and her hubby; complete with horses, shotgun shell place card holders, mixed-matched vintage table settings and she even sported cowboy boots for a bit. When I was still in Florida, we'd meet up during our lunch breaks to hunt for vintage wooden picture frames and milk glass. She also used the design we created for her save the date on water bottles. It was so fun to see it all come together.
Congratulations to the Roe's!
P.S. I'm going to wait until Monday to go live on the new 6 petals site. I need to update a few links and make sure it's perfect. Can't wait to share it with ya. Happy weekend!

Another joy of being home is spending time with my three nieces. This is niece #2, protecting the cracker I was trying to steal from her mouth.
They are irresistibly cute in every way.

Most of the blogs I'm drawn to have beautiful photography that captures all the pretty, little details that many people may overlook each day: reflections, side roads, even beer garnish. Olivia's blog, Everyday Musings, does just that. And, I just love her simple blog branding.

I love these grainy, sepia-toned images from Daniel Kincaid styled by Amy of Refuses to Label. The simple, flowy off-white dresses aren't too bad either.

A couple weeks ago we ventured to Harrisonburg, VA for a graduation celebration.
The graduation party was held at one of the graduate's family farm. The 30 minute drive from the college took us miles away from any store and into the quiet farmland-- dairy farms, goats, and silver silos around every hilly corner. His dad built their house some 25 years ago; a quaint dark wood cottage-like home that sits nestled behind old oak trees. There are five houses on this farm, and they each share duties raising a few cows.
I'm so connected most of the time that I love getting away and thinking about a more simplistic lifestyle.

::healthful::
Tuesday, 8 May 2012
For the month of May I've vowed to drink green juice everyday and live off {mostly} fruits & vegetables. No meat. This isn't an attempt to become a vegetarian/vegan, though I fully respect that lifestyle. It's a challenge to eat more healthfully. Green juice is surprisingly sweet and filling! Every morning I juice whatever I picked up from the produce stand: kale, cucumber, apples (granny smith and pink lady usually), celery, ginger, cucumber, spinach, oranges – in some combination. Along with a banana, this holds me over until dinner when we roast, grill, bake or steam fresh vegetables. Have you ever seen purple asparagus? When you cook it, it turn green. Here's to eating colorfully...

I sure missed spending Easter with my family in Florida, but it helped having such a pleasant Spring day here in VA. The morning was spent photographing inventory for the 6 petals shop and soaking/cleaning lots of beautiful vintage clothing. My collection is really growing. One of these days I'll get to sharing it!
We had a late lunch planned with Jay's family, and it was only fitting to make a carrot side dish, right? This recipe was super easy and a crowd pleaser.
steamed carrots with ginger-lime butter
peeled carrots (the ones with the stems just look better)
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 tbsp butter
1 tsp fresh minced ginger
squeeze of lime juice + some lime rind
salt + pepper to taste
Just steam the carrots for about 10 minutes. Mix the remaining ingredients in a small skillet on medium heat. Then coat onto carrots and serve.
I bought a bouquet of tulips for myself last week and I'm so impressed to see them still going strong. I picked up more to bring to the hostess. They're wrapped in kraft paper and tied with this amazing vintage, ombre satin ribbon-- I found a bag filled with rolls of different colors at a local Goodwill. Jackpot.
