a favorite

Monday 30 June 2014

Though I haven't met a flower I didn't like, magnolia blossoms are among my favorite. Classic and simple with pure, silky white petals and dark green leaves. In my next life I'll be a florist.

just a bit north

Monday 30 June 2014

As much as I dream of traveling over seas, I still get excited to see new places not so far away. A few years ago Jay told me about this island (some is Maryland, some is Virginia) where wild horses roam the beaches and marshland. Oh, and it's only 2 hours away? Let's go.

We called this our anniversary camping trip. Just the two of us, some skydiving at a new-to-us dropzone, crab picking and camping/beaching/hiking Assateague & Chincoteague Parks to find those wild horses. Of course I forgot my camera, but we snapped a few from our phones. I love spending my time going on adventures with this man.

Just outside Assateague State Park we spotted the first of the wild horses. I was worried it would be difficult to find them, but they've gotten use to the visitors and just keep eating. We spotted quite a few throughout the trip. Most of them have this beautiful carmel and white coloring with a shaggy mane. I wanted to take them home with me.

Our morning view from the tent before skydiving. Corn field everywhere. And, I've been looking for a wood slab with a live edge for a headboard in the guest bedroom. Well, this totally random nautical gift shop on our way home had plenty to choose from. Sometimes things just work out for me.

pungo

Virginia Beach is such a neat place. It's so widespread. You can visit the beach (or the Bay), be amongst the forests in the state park and enjoy farm land in good ol' Pungo. My mother-in-law took me to her barn over the weekend, and I was so excited to meet the beautiful residents.

As we arrived, they were calling the horses back into the barn. This is Biggie. And rightfully so, he was huge. His stall is fortunately placed right by the lockers so he got the first apple treat. He was so gentle. I could have stared at him all day. I loved the colors on Pippa, the white horse with the brown spots in the photo below. She yawned twice as I was petting her long face, and I was able to catch her tongue out. So friendly and sweet. The barn was full of other animals too— dogs, birds and cats — each one thinking they owned the place.

A piece of my heart will always be in Florida with my family, but this sure is a special place to call home.

pick a pair

Wednesday 25 June 2014

Ever since my husband slid a beautiful yellow gold ring on that special finger, I've been very particular with jewelry. Most of the time, my wedding ring is the only piece I wear. Before that, you'd see me with chunky sterling silver rings on 6 out of 10 fingers sometimes partnered with an equally chunky silver cuff bracelet. I still love those pieces, but now I learn towards minimal pieces in brass or yellow gold, like a simple necklace or minimal earrings.

I've owned two pairs of earrings from Upper Metal Class (and I've posted about T's work on my blog before). Somehow I end up losing one. This time, I was rushing to put on my bar earrings at work and one dropped through the crack in the elevator threshold. Of course it fell right there. I had a few choice words.

Now, I'm back to the shop to find another pair, and again finding it hard to decide. I like the idea of the mix-matched shapes. Or why not a skull?

I stumbled across the beautiful home of architect Ken Meffan and family. Ken spent 10 years building this natural, rugged, modern home by hand in the Sierra Mountains of Northern California. I love how it brings in so much of the outdoors— you can never have enough plants, wood and stone.

Uhm, just look at that door and pivot mechanism. I have so many house ideas on my mind. If you need to find me this weekend, I'll be at home, neck deep in fun projects!

bedroom inspiration

Monday 16 June 2014

We've been in our home for a year and a half. The obvious (and well-used) rooms are mostly setup, but I've neglected our spare bedrooms. We did manage to get beds in there, but other than that, it's pretty bland. A nightstand would probably be nice, huh? I've made it a priority to give these rooms some attention and make it a little more enjoyable for our guests.

I'm a big fan of keeping things pretty neutral, and then adding some accents here and there – pillows, artwork or a throw rug. One thing that's certain is my love for simple wooden beds. I've been searching for months for the right one at the right price (to no avail), so I'm considering building them myself...which means I could choose the wood for the base and maybe find a beautiful slab with a live edge for a headboard like that photo up top. A girl can dream.

first

Wednesday 4 June 2014

On Sunday, Jay and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary. We spent the day together and each had a few surprises throughout the day. Let's just say an origami T-Rex is another reason I love this man. After reminiscing about our big day, we found ourselves incredibly thankful for our family and friends, and obviously for each other.

I could watch this video a million times, and you can see more photos over on 100 Layer Cake.

a new start

Monday 2 June 2014

As I announced last week, I've closed my 6 petals vintage shop. I'm so thankful for all my family, friends and complete strangers who supported my little business. In my 4 years selling vintage, I've shipped items to Australia, Japan, China Europe and throughout the US.

It was a tough decision, but I knew it was the right time. Now I'm excited about this new space! It's a work in progressbut will soon be a place to keep my creative brain happy.

You'll be able to search through all the old posts from Blogger here, but I'm unable to import blog posts from the Squarespace site. Oh, and if you know anyone looking for a good deal on vintage goods, send them my way!
