It was so nice spending over a week back in Florida. Actually, even after 5 months it felt like I hadn't really been gone. Now, back in Virginia, it rained all day and with it came cold. I'm not complaining, just in need of warm wears. I picked up a beautiful vintage coat (with a fur neckline!) at a antique market last month, but it's too nice for daily duds. My eyes are peeled for the perfect carmel coat like she's wearing. This one from Etsy is pretty close...

I never thought about altering long coats. If it's a little long, just bring it to a seamstress.  Thanks for the tip, Lauren.

I've got a lovely post over on Jill's blog, Lune Vintage, filled with vintage goodness. Hop on over and take a look, kinda like a field trip.

LUNE VINTAGE post

Monday, 28 November 2011

Hi. I'm another one of those vintage junkies. I decorate with antiques, retro + industrial items, I wear old worn-in leather boots and put flowers in my hair. And, you can find me over at 6 petals. Thanks, Jill, for letting me share some vintage love.

Adding vintage touches to your closet and home can be simple and inexpensive. Some of my favorite things are found in flea markets, yard sales + antique fairs. The trick: you have to hunt for it. There are so many amazing things just waiting to be loved. See that big coffee tin up there? I have tons of vintage tins and use them for storing all sorts of knick-knacks – way better than plastic bins. Find new ways to utilize old pieces: add a brooch to your headband, wrap a gift in vintage fabric or turn an old window into a seating chart.

A few weeks ago was a true pickers experience. I met a fellow vintage junkie at a market in town and she said she had tons more in her home...so I invited myself over. Her amazing 2-story historic home was filled wall-to-wall with antique furniture, vintage hardware, painted wood pieces, old frames...heaven?

The town is very old and pretty small too. We drove down a little early to hit up some garage sales where we found a box filled with classic vinyl records. This has become a new Sunday tradition-- just sitting around listening to the record player.

I just thought this image was so simple + love the colors. I saw a trailer for one of her upcoming (lovey-dovey) movies, The Vow, on another blog (thanks, Jessica!). She seems so down to earth and she's Canadian. I'm not Canadian, but I loved visiting Vancouver.

I'm so happy to be home with my family for Thanksgiving. I plan on eating more than my fair share of green bean casserole and having lots of play time with my pretty little nieces. There's so much to be thankful for. Enjoy the long weekend with your loved ones!

p.s. THANK YOU!

::window seating charts // devon's wedding::

Monday, 21 November 2011

I was super excited when I got an email from Devon a few month ago. She saw this post and wanted me to create custom window seating charts for her wedding in Los Angeles. Over the next few months we sent countless emails back and forth about her wedding colors, guest list, needing another window, excitement over how much she liked them, and how happy I was to be a tiny part of such a gorgeous wedding.

Devon chose yellow + white for the window colors to match the theme. We needed three windows, each with 6 panes to represent each table. When she finalized the guest list, I started writing the seating chart.

I've been so excited to share this project. Devon's wedding was all kinds of awesome. The couple had an amazing photographer capture all the beautiful moments. She had so many vintage touches all over the stunning ranch where it took place-- what a venue!

**I will be adding this as a listing in my shop. Or, contact me for custom window seating charts, I'd love to create one for your big day.**

As soon as I saw this shop it was love at first sight-- quality leather, vintage materials, unique + colorful graphics, awesome textures. Except for the clown. Not a fan of clowns.

What they say: "TOTeM blends vintage fabrics, textures, patterns and materials to develop contemporary looks with a taste of the past. Designer Stephanie Larrowe of And Cake and Cake Couture scours the earth in search of vintage treasures that piece together each one of a kind look."

...you haven't seen this yet. I stumbled upon Miranda July's little video a couple months ago and watched it again yesterday. I don't know if I have the will-power to put my favorite item in such a vulnerable situation. I'm one of those she labels 'easily distracted' (there's so much awesomeness out there). The video is so simply + beautifully done. Don't you just love to 'unplug' sometimes and leave the electronics behind...or trapped?!

There's tons of cool stuff from nowness.com. Go look-- if you have a few hours to kill.

I guess I have a thing for kitchens...

The neat lighting, plenty of green chairs and a long table for friends + family, and lots of cement. I love those numbers on the oven too...especially the sixes.

Wednesday, 9 November 2011

I seem to be in a bit of a rut lately. I have this sort of anxiety looming over me. I don't like it. For the past few months I've been working on some contract work, so I'm glued to my monitor roughly 10 hours a day. There's so much I want to get done in a day. I'm constantly thinking about new ideas for the blog, designing, the shop, packaging, projects, places I should go to acquire new vintage treasures, different methods of marketing + advertising...it's hard to shut off a creative mind, especially when it's time to sleep.

I guess I'm wondering...how do you other designer + creative types get through looong weeks and too much computer time? What keeps you sane?

My eyes + brain need a vacation.

::DIY // a fresh, white mirror::

Tuesday, 8 November 2011

This past weekend was time for me to catch up on a few projects from my DIY list. J installed a shelf on Saturday and we're displaying some newly acquired records and some of my collected vintage. More on that later in the week.

A while ago I found this old, large (and super heavy) mirror at the thrift store for 10 bucks. I fell in love with the wide floral-patterned frame and the glass is in excellent condition. The frame has seen some wear and tear...but it's better that way. All it needed was a fresh coat of white paint and it's perfect. For now, it's making for a great floor mirror until we can find a wall strong enough for it.

I picked up this old program from a vintage collector and new friend. Her house was filled with all kinds of antique furniture, vintage hardware, old frames...a little bit of everything. It's a B.F. Keith's Palace Theatre program from December 1917. It's right on Broadway and after reading about it, it's even more fascinating. It's so cool to flip through the pages. I've always been drawn to the creative inside publications. Top department stores on 5th Avenue showing off fancy fur coats, FAO Schwarz advertising winter sporting goods, beauty products and Turkish cigarettes...

There's even articles on proper attire for men and women while attending the theatre. Wouldn't it be nice to dress to the nines for nights out these days? Ladies, get your fur coats.

Friday, 4 November 2011

The wind is howling outside right now as the temperature begins to drop. The house smells like roasted vegetables and apple cider is keeping me warm. I may have spiked it...it's Friday.

I have a long list of DIY projects that I plan to tackle. Enjoy your weekend and spend some time getting cozy.

Seeing this little guy on the coffee table after a long day sure made my Tuesday evening better. The photography is always beautiful-- the lighting, the colors, the settings. And I'd take any pair from their collection of boots, please. Here are some other pieces that caught my eye...

I'm a big fan of twine, hemp, lace + string. I use it pretty often for all sorts of crafts + packaging. I found this string holder DIY on Lover of Vintage and it's such a simple and easy idea for an old metal hanger. It doesn't take up much space, and those metal hangers are so pesky in the closet. I can't wait to try this one out.
